Squick or Squee 2015 commissions : Grand Guignol

The Commission

Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol was a little theater in Paris with a long influence, so much so that the term “grand guignol” ended up entering the English language as a term meaning a performance associated with particular shock and horror.

Some of the poster art from the plays produced there has come down to us, and I have made the recreation of it the theme for the the 2015 “Squick or Squee” parade. Artists are invited to use their imagination and skills to recreate the old poster art in ways that they find interesting, with publication to take place at the end of October 2015. The project is in some ways similar to the the pulp art reconstructions project that was opened to commissions in March 2015. The emphasis here, though, will be somewhat less on making explicit what could not be made explicit on a magazine cover in mid-twentieth century America, and more on the artist using his or her own imagination for a creative realization of the old material.

Individual items will be marked “ASSIGNED” as artists take up commissions.
