An illustration to Thomas Ligotti’s story called “Town Manager” A truly terrifying story of futility, vain hopes and inability of a person to escape a life forced upon him. Perhaps, it scares me so much, because I don’t want to believe, that one day it can be applicable to me.
It’s about a town that suffers a current of degenerate town managers, and each one is even more degenerate than his incompetent predecessor: one of them orders an unnecessary trolley on the main street of the town, the next manager orders to destroy it. When the citizens linger, he insists: a trolley comes to a stop and doesn’t move, just for the people to discover its operator dead on the floor with “DUSTROY TROLY” burned into his chest. The trolley on its final ride, carrying the dead operator, killed by a person of authority that nobody ever saw… It moved me deeply.

Ужасающая история о невозможности побега от невыносимой жизни – она все-равно тебя настигнет. Возможно, рассказ пугает меня столь сильно потому, что я не хочу в него верить. В рассказе и дет речь о городке, который разрушает текучка некомпетентных мэров. Кроме того, каждый новый городской голова еще хуже предыдущего. Один из них приказывает установить псреди главной улицы трамвай, в котором нет надобности – жителей не так много, город не столь велик. Следующий мэр, которого никто вообще не видит, приказывает разрушить трамвай. Сбитые с толку жители не спешат, и в один день трамвай замирает в конечной точке и не двигается. На полу находят мертвого водителя со словами “УНИЧТЖТЕ ТРМВЙ”, выжжеными на его груди. Вагон трамвая, который едет с обезображенным водителем на полу – образ намертво застрял в моей голове.
